Origin & Lineage

Human Design has a single human source: Ra Uru Hu, born Robert Allan Krakower in Montreal in 1948. After a career as advertising executive, magazine publisher, and media producer, Krakower walked away from his life in 1983 and ended up on Ibiza. On the evening of January 3, 1987, he encountered "the Voice" — an eight-day, eight-night transmission that he transcribed in detail and that became Human Design. He spent the next twenty-four years teaching and disseminating the system before his death in 2011.

The system claims to synthesize four prior wisdom traditions rather than derive from any of them:

1. Astrology — the system uses the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and lunar nodes at birth, plus a second chart calculated for the moment 88° of solar arc before birth (≈3 months prior) to capture the "design" (unconscious / soul inheritance) alongside the "personality" (conscious).
2. I Ching — the sky is divided into sixty-four arc segments (rather than astrology's twelve signs), each corresponding to one of the sixty-four hexagrams of the Book of Changes. Each segment is a "Gate" with a specific meaning.
3. Chakra system — the nine "Centers" of the BodyGraph correspond loosely to the seven Hindu chakras plus two additional centers (the Ajna/Mind and the G/Identity center are sometimes treated as splits of the third-eye chakra; the Sacral and Root form the lower complex).
4. Kabbalah — the Tree of Life pattern is said to underlie the BodyGraph's geometric structure.

The institutional infrastructure is the International Human Design School (IHDS), founded by Ra Uru Hu and now directed by lynda-bunnell; the rights-holding entity is Jovian Archive Media Inc. The principal published reference works are human-design-the-science-of-differentiation (Bunnell with Ra, 2011, the official canon), understanding-human-design (Parker, 2009/2025, comprehensive practitioner reference), and human-design-parkyn (Parkyn, 2009, mass-market introduction).

Core Structure

The full Human Design system has many components; the principal structural elements:

The BodyGraph

The Nine Centers

• Head/Crown (triangle, top): inspiration, mental pressure to know.
• Ajna/Mind (triangle, second from top): conceptualization, mental processing.
• Throat (square, middle-upper): manifestation, expression, communication.
• G/Identity (diamond, center): identity, direction, love.
• Heart/Will (small triangle, mid-right): willpower, ego, material world.
• Sacral (square, lower-center): generative life-force energy, sexuality, work.
• Solar Plexus / Emotions (triangle, lower-right): emotional awareness, feeling, spirit.
• Spleen (triangle, lower-left): intuition, survival, immune.
• Root (square, bottom): stress, adrenaline, drive.

A center is defined (colored) if at least one Channel passing through it is fully activated; otherwise undefined (white / open) and the locus of conditioning.

The Five Types

The chart's defined-center configuration determines Type. See human-design-types.

• Manifestor (~9% of population): Throat connected to a motor (Sacral, Heart, Solar Plexus, or Root). Strategy: inform and initiate. Authority varies.
• Generator (~37%): defined Sacral, not connected to Throat. Strategy: wait to respond. Authority: Sacral.
• Manifesting Generator (~33%): defined Sacral connected to Throat. Strategy: respond and inform. Authority: Sacral or Emotional.
• Projector (~20%): no defined Sacral; not a Reflector. Strategy: wait for invitation. Authority varies.
• Reflector (~1%): no defined centers. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle (28 days). Authority: lunar.

The Twelve Profiles

Each chart has a Profile (e.g., 1/3, 2/4, 5/1) derived from the lines of the conscious Sun and unconscious Sun. Each Profile is a developmental archetype.

The Authorities

Each Type uses a specific inner authority for decision-making, distinct from the mental processing of the conditioned mind:

• Emotional/Solar Plexus Authority: wait through an emotional wave for clarity.
• Sacral Authority: trust the gut "uh-huh" / "uh-uh" response.
• Splenic Authority: trust the intuitive in-the-moment knowing.
• Heart/Ego Authority: trust what the heart wills.
• G-Center/Self-Projected Authority: speak it out loud and listen to oneself.
• Mental/Outer-Authority (Projectors only): talk it through with trusted others.
• Lunar Authority (Reflectors only): wait 28 days.

Strategy and Authority

The combined Type-specific Strategy and Authority is the system's central practice — "the catalyst of transformation" (Ra Uru Hu). Living by Strategy and Authority is taught to produce deconditioning of the not-self over time (Ra: seven years; Parker: variable depending on integration with other practices).

Empirical / Theoretical Status

• Evidence base: esoteric (revealed). The system rests on a single transmitting source (Ra Uru Hu's 1987 encounter with "the Voice") and on practitioner-clinical-anecdotal accumulation of cases. No formal empirical testing has been conducted.
• Falsifiable claims: in principle, Type-specific behavioral patterns and the not-self emotional signatures (frustration / bitterness / anger / disappointment) should be testable. The "seven-year deconditioning through cell replacement" claim is not supported by current cell-biology (Parker critiques this in understanding-human-design). The "neutrino imprint" mechanism is not supported by physics.
• Critiques:
  • Scientific: the neutrino-imprint mechanism is not consistent with how neutrinos actually interact with matter; the seven-year cell-replacement claim is contradicted by neurobiology; no proposed mechanism survives serious scrutiny.
  • From astrology: Hellenistic-revival astrologers view the four-wisdoms synthesis as a syncretism that does justice to none of its components.
  • Internal: Parker's Quantum Human Design variant has been viewed by the orthodox IHDS lineage as a deviation from authentic transmission.
  • Epistemological: the "revealed" origin (a single eight-day transmission to one person, witnessed by no one else) is a fundamental vulnerability; the "test it for yourself" methodology is inadequate for verifying systemic claims.

The wiki's stance: descriptive. Human Design is a real intellectual artifact with substantial practitioner uptake, institutional infrastructure (IHDS), and cultural reach. Its claims to scientific status are unsupported; its claims to practical usefulness (Type-specific decision-making, deconditioning practice) are reported as real by many users. The system is best evaluated as a symbolic-practical framework rather than a scientific or strictly esoteric one.

Practitioner Workflow

1. Generate a BodyGraph using accurate birth date, time, and place (Human Design software computes both the conscious and unconscious charts).
2. Identify the Type from the defined-center configuration.
3. Note the Strategy for that Type.
4. Note the Authority for the chart (varies by which centers are defined).
5. Identify the Profile (conscious Sun line / unconscious Sun line).
6. Read the defined Centers (consistent traits) and the open Centers (locations of conditioning).
7. For deeper work: examine specific Channels and Gates that are active; consider the Variables (the "color" system that adds nuance).
8. Live by Strategy and Authority as the daily practice; observe how decisions made by Strategy-and-Authority produce different outcomes than decisions made by the conditioned mind.

Tensions ⚠

• Orthodox vs. variant lineages. IHDS / Bunnell lineage maintains authentic Ra transmission; Parker's Quantum HD modifies vocabulary and integrates EFT; Parkyn operates outside both. Real lineage disagreements.
• The seven-year deconditioning claim is internally contested (Parker critiques it; Bunnell maintains it).
• The relationship to astrology is contested. Some practitioners read HD as "astrology done better"; others as a separate system that happens to use astrological data; others as a debased version of astrology.
• Scientific status. The system's founding claims (neutrino imprint, revealed origin) are scientifically unsupported. Practitioners variously: (a) reframe HD as symbolic-practical rather than scientific; (b) maintain the founding claims despite scientific evidence; (c) propose alternative mechanisms (synchronicity, archetypal pattern, etc.).
• Pop-culture simplification. The 2010s-2020s mass uptake of Human Design has often reduced it to "what's your Type?" — losing the depth of the system as Ra taught it.
