American clinical psychologist (1921–2013) who revived four-temperament theory for modern psychology, kept Myers' sixteen MBTI codes but rejected her function-stack metaphysics, and grounded typology in two observable behaviors — *word use* (concrete vs. abstract) and *tool use* (utilitarian vs. cooperative).

Biographical Sketch

Born in Oklahoma in 1921, raised in California. Marine Corps fighter pilot in the Pacific theater during WWII. Earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Claremont Graduate University in 1962 and spent his career as a family therapist and educational psychologist, specializing in children and adolescents whose temperaments made conventional schooling difficult — disproportionately Artisans (SP) and underrepresented Idealists (NF).

Keirsey's intellectual project was to rescue temperament theory from the 20th century's behaviorist and psychodynamic eclipse. He read Hippocrates, Galen, Plato, Aristotle, Paracelsus, Adickes, Spränger, Kretschmer, Fromm — finding in each a four-fold typology that converged with his own clinical observation. The 1978 book with Marilyn Bates (Please Understand Me) brought temperament theory to a mass audience; the 1998 revision (Please Understand Me II) systematized it. He continued to publish and consult into his late 80s; died in 2013 at age 91.

Keirsey was unusual among MBTI-adjacent theorists in being not a Myers disciple. He used Myers' four-letter codes for convenience and historical continuity but reorganized the framework on his own behavioral-empiricist terms. He was, by his own report, an INTJ Rational Mastermind.

Author SWOT

  • Strengths. Empirically grounded typology — the two observable behaviors (word use, tool use) are testable. The four-temperament structure has 2400 years of cross-cultural pedigree. The four-intelligences move is humane (no one is "low IQ" — they have a different intelligence). The book is exceptionally readable. The temperament framework solves the "what is MBTI for at the team level?" problem in a way the sixteen-type framework does not.

  • Weaknesses. Rejection of the function-stack discards real Jungian insight (compensation, inferior-function dynamics). The four-intelligences claim is theoretically suggestive but lacks rigorous empirical scaffolding. Cross-temperament marriages and parenting get less attention than they should. Cross-cultural validation is thin. The bimodal-categorical claim faces the same empirical problems as MBTI.

  • Opportunities. Hybridizing Keirsey's behavior-anchored diagnostic with naomi-quenk's inferior-function clinical work could yield the most useful applied typology framework. Integrating four-intelligences with contemporary cognitive science (domain-specific competence) is a fertile research direction. Applying temperament-intelligence to AI displacement risk-mapping is timely.

  • Threats. Academic psychology has not embraced the four-temperament framework any more than it has MBTI. The bimodal claim faces the same critique. Popular skepticism about typology has spread to Keirsey's framework by association.

"What Would Keirsey Say About...?"

  • Career repurposing: Identify temperament. Identify its native intelligence. Match work to intelligence. The expensive career mistake is cross-temperament work undertaken for status or stability. Mid-life repurposing is often the discovery that the first career was a cross-temperament error.

  • Suffering and meaning: Suffering is most often cross-temperament living — the Rational required to do logistics for years, the Artisan required to live by Guardian schedule, the Idealist forced into Rational impersonality. Meaning comes from temperament-fit: the right role variant of one's temperament, in the right life-stage.

  • Identity transitions: Identity is temperament + role variant + life-stage. Transitions are role-variant shifts within stable temperament — not "becoming a new person" but finding the temperament's new expression for the new stage.

  • Human–AI collaboration (extrapolated): AI is logistically strong and partially strategic; weak tactically and diplomatically. Assign AI logistical-strategic load; keep humans on tactical-diplomatic work. Guardians (logistical) are at greatest displacement risk; Artisans (tactical, embodied) are most insulated; Idealists (diplomatic) are insulated in human-facing work; Rationals (strategic) collaborate with AI as the AI's strategic supervisor.
