Anthem (Personal/Brand)
Hogshead's operational discipline of compressing one's Highest Distinct Value into a two-to-five-word "adjective + noun" formulation — a "tagline for your personality" or brand — that functions as a positioning filter and a memory hook.

Working Definition
An Anthem is not a slogan, mission statement, or value proposition. It is a short, almost epigrammatic verbal artifact that captures the distinct mode of one's fascination. In the Hogshead method, the adjective is drawn from one's secondary Fascination Advantage's five-adjective list; the noun is drawn from one's primary Advantage's list. The result is a phrase like "Surprisingly bold solutions" (Innovation primary, Power secondary), "Methodically reliable partner" (Trust primary, Alert secondary), or "Discerning, in-the-know advisor" (Prestige primary, Mystique secondary).
The Anthem then functions in three ways: as a pre-commitment device (read before any consequential communication act), as a filter (does this email, this proposal, this offer sound like the Anthem?), and as a recruitment signal (the audiences who resonate with the Anthem self-select toward you).
How Different Authors Frame It
- sally-hogshead in how-the-world-sees-you: the Anthem is the book's culminating practical exercise. "The Anthem Method" is given its own chapter; Hogshead frames it as "the tagline for your personality."
- sally-hogshead in fascinate: the Anthem (and its precursor concept, the "differentiating adjectives") is applied to brand positioning rather than personal positioning.
The discipline is in the lineage of Madison-Avenue copywriting's commitment to one-sentence positioning (David Ogilvy's "the customer is not a moron — she is your wife") and of Trout & Ries's Positioning (own one word in the prospect's mind).
Mechanism / How It Works
The mechanism is one of compression-forcing-clarity. Writing a two-to-five-word Anthem cannot be done by accretion; it can only be done by subtraction of everything that is not distinctly you. The discipline therefore produces a kind of cognitive forced-function: you cannot dodge the polarization question, because there is no room in five words for vanilla hedging.
Once written, the Anthem operates as a System-1 retrieval cue. Hogshead's claim is that Anthem-aligned communication compounds in audience memory the way a brand jingle does — the audience starts to expect a certain register from you, which is the operational definition of brand equity.
Practical Use
- For someone navigating a career transition. Write the Anthem before updating the résumé or LinkedIn headline. Then rewrite both to satisfy it. The Anthem is upstream of the artifacts; if the Anthem is muddled, every downstream artifact will be muddled.
- For someone in identity crisis. The Anthem exercise is a recovery-of-self exercise. The crisis is often the collapse of an inherited Anthem (one's family's, profession's, partner's); writing your own is a quiet act of differentiation.
- For someone leading an organization. Each team member's Anthem can be elicited and recorded; team Anthems form a portfolio that makes role-allocation legible (and that surfaces overlap, gap, and burnout risk).
Editorial Note
Editorial: The Anthem is the most exportable artifact of Hogshead's system. In a near-future where AI agents work on a person's behalf, the personal Anthem functions almost natively as a system-prompt for those agents — a stable identity vector that the agents read before composing on your behalf. This is a use Hogshead does not develop in the books but that the framework supports cleanly.
Tensions ⚠
- Anthem as performance vs. Anthem as discovery. Written from the outside (what would sound impressive?), the Anthem becomes performance, and audiences detect the gap. Written from the inside (what is already true of how I show up?), the Anthem becomes diagnosis. The exercise is only useful in the second mode.
- Anthem fixity vs. life-stage drift. The framework implies the Anthem is stable. But life-stage transitions (the second half of life in Hollis's sense) plausibly require a new Anthem. The framework does not address Anthem revision.
